Understanding Bunions

A bunion is more than just a bump on the side of the foot. It occurs when the big toe gradually shifts towards the second toe, causing the joint at the base of the toe to become prominent.

While footwear often gets the blame, genetics play a significant role. The shape and function of your feet, joint flexibility, and family history can all influence whether bunions develop over time.

For me, my flat foot posture and underlying weakness through the foot and lower limb contributed to increased stress on the big toe joint. Over many years, this led to mild bunion formation.

My Journey with Orthotics

One of the most valuable tools in managing my own foot health has been custom orthotic therapy.

I started wearing orthotics early in my career after recognising how much strain my feet were under during long clinic days. The difference was remarkable. I noticed less fatigue, improved stability, and better alignment through my feet and legs.

Orthotics haven’t “fixed” my bunions—because conservative treatments cannot reverse the structural changes that have already occurred—but they have helped support my foot function, reduce stress on vulnerable joints, and slow progression.

Most importantly, they’ve helped me stay comfortable doing what I love.

Looking After Your

Future Feet

As I’ve moved through my own foot health journey, I’ve come to appreciate something I often share with clients: the feet you have today are the feet you’ll rely on for decades to come.

Taking care of them isn’t about perfection. It’s about preserving comfort, mobility, and quality of life.

Whether you’re noticing the first signs of a bunion, struggling with flat feet, or simply wondering if your feet could be functioning better, know that you’re not alone. Many of us—even podiatrists—are managing our own foot challenges too.

And sometimes, the first step towards healthier feet is simply understanding them.

At LuxeFeet, we’re here to help guide that journey with expertise, compassion, and a little luxury along the way.

Our focus is always on helping you remain active, comfortable, and confident in your everyday life.

As a podiatrist, I’m often asked whether I have foot problems myself. The answer is yes.

Like many of our clients, I wasn’t born with “perfect” feet. I have flat feet, naturally flexible joints, and over the years I’ve developed mild bunion formation. I’ve experienced the fatigue that comes from poor foot mechanics, the aches after long days on my feet, and the frustration of trying to find stylish shoes that are also supportive.

In many ways, my own feet have shaped the way I practise podiatry.

Why Early Intervention Matters

One of the biggest misconceptions about bunions is that people should wait until they’re severe before seeking advice.

The reality is that early intervention often provides the best opportunity to manage symptoms and support long-term foot health.

At LuxeFeet, we regularly help clients who are experiencing:

  • Early bunion formation
  • Foot fatigue
  • Flat feet
  • Arch pain
  • Difficulty finding comfortable footwear
  • Pain around the big toe joint
  • Progressive changes in foot shape

By addressing these concerns early, we can often help reduce discomfort and improve function before symptoms become more significant.

A Modern Approach to Bunion Care

Every foot is different, which is why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to bunion treatment.

Depending on your needs, treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive biomechanical assessment
  • Custom orthotic therapy
  • Foot strengthening and rehabilitation exercises
  • Footwear recommendations
  • Protective padding and pressure relief
  • Bunion splints and alignment devices
  • Laser therapy to help reduce pain and inflammation
  • Surgical referral and co-management when appropriate

“Because beautiful feet aren’t just about how they look—they’re about how they carry you through life.”
